Badugi poker is a four card lowball, triple draw game where how many different suits you have is just as important as how low your cards are. To develop a solid strategy to use at the tournament table, you have to be able to read people, watch the amount of cards they throw away each round, and incorporate some good luck. There is only one winner per hand, so you might want to play conservative at first.
Badugi poker hand progression begins with the typical small and big blind payments. Then each player is dealt four cards-one at a time. Each round of dealing is followed by a round of betting, then a discard round where a player can get rid of up to four cards or stand pat.
To know which cards to throw away, you will need to understand the hand rankings. This game is played as lowball poker and aces are always counted as low. Keep them unless you have a pair then discard the ace that is suited with any of the other cards you are going to keep. A,2,3,4 unsuited is the best possible hand to have. A badugi that is higher than an 8 will probably get beaten. Any four card badugi will beat a 3 card. Three card beats 2 card, etc. Actually you would be foolish to be in the showdown with a two card or less, anyway.
Round By Round Advice
Having a knowledge of other poker games will only help you in the first round. After that it is all badugi poker strategy. In the 1st round of betting you need to keep unsuited cards only and no pairs, preferably cards that are under a 6. Be conservative this round check/call unless you have a solid badugi and plan to stand pat. Slow play that hand even. A huge bet here will net you little more than the blinds.
You can get a little more aggressive in the second round, but not too much. You should watch you opponents for the number of discards in this and the previous round. If they take 2 or more, they are probably fishing and are sitting weak handed. If you have a pat hand, bet it. Drive out the fishers with a medium bet-about a quarter of the pot or double the minimum.
In the third and fourth round you better have a good hand or fold to keep from wasting your chips. A good hand being a badugi or a three card that has a chance of being low-6 or lower- and winning the hand. If your hand is the slightest bit shaky, a check/fold is your best bet here.
